Vernon Voices: a photographic history

Vernon Voices: a photographic history

Vernon Voices creates a community mosaic of Vernon School experiences, present and past, through the photography and interviews by middle-school students.  It is a documentary project that illuminates the history not only of the Vernon School, but also of the northeast neighborhoods where Vernon School students and their families reside. Neighborhood schools reflect in crucial ways how we raise our children and the values we hold most dearly as a community. Vernon Voices is an exciting and unique effort to bring into focus and create dialog about the identity of the school and its surrounding neighborhoods. The Vernon Voices project focuses on current and students and recent alumni who have a parent, grandparent, guardian or immediate family member from a previous generation who attended Vernon. Such a selection process promises a long-term and intergenerational perspective on the school and its surrounding neighborhoods and offers a critical reflection on the central place as well as the displacement of African-American families from the neighborhood during the most recent decades.
